Explorationtrip to the fascinatingsouth of Nepal

23. Aug. 2023

The Fair Trails Himalayas project is making great strides forward. After the first Fair Trails offers for the "Snow Leopard Trail" have been bookable since the beginning of November, an intensive reconnaissance trip for the next Fair Trail was successfully completed during the last weeks.

Trail Angels CEO and Nepal expert Günter Mussnig put together an experienced team to traverse a trail through the Lower Himalayas, the so-called Mahabharat Mountains, and experience the life of different ethnic groups with their very own cultures, economies and food. The technical expert in the team was Prashanta Khanal, well-known food blogger and climate activist in Nepal, who prepared the overall concept of the trail through his meticulous preparatory work. Other members of the team were our experienced guide Mingma Sherpa, the Fair Trails project manager in Nepal Saurabh Bhattarai and, of course, Nepal expert and managing director of our project partner ENNOVENT, Peter Scheuch.

The tour was organised by Raj Gyawali, head of the agency Social Tours and mastermind for sustainable and innovative tourism in Nepal.

After intensive and often exhausting exploration, an attractive route through the Mahabharat Mountains with subsequent excursions into the Terai, the lowlands of Nepal, could be fixed. Future clients will be able to stay in homestays, in the private homes of families, and enjoy the region’s varied cuisine away from the “trekking standard fare”. The very special thing about this trail is to get to know four different, interesting ethnic groups at once, the Newari, the Gurung, the Chepang and finally the Tharus. And to gain a deep insight into their lives, be it bat hunting with the Chepang or fishing with the Tharu in the jungle river.

The crowning glory of this new Fair Trail will be a visit to Tiger Tops Tharu Lodge in Chitwan National Park. Tiger Tops is Asia’s most famous brand for sustainable wildlife tourism and leads the world’s longest tiger population census series with the Tiger Monitoring Project.

The new Fair Trails (we are still looking for a suitable brand) will soon be bookable on BOOKYOURTRAIL. In the meantime, there is still a lot of work waiting for the Fair Trails team. Fair Trails is a joint venture of Trail Angels and Ennovent and is co-financed by the Austrian Development Agency, Austria’s official agency for development cooperation.
