Wörthersee Rundwanderweg Hiking pleasure in perfection

My job is to develop the routes for new long-distance hiking trails. Or to prepare existing trails that can be booked at Bookyourtrail.com for you. If you get jealous now: You have good reason to be! Because in my job I can contribute to many fantastic trails like the Luchs Trail, the Bernstein Trail or the Krk Island Trail. However, there is a trail where I am jealous that I was not able to help developing the route – the route has been around for several years – it is the Wörthersee Rundwanderweg. For me it is the prototype of an inspiring leisure hiking trail, indeed it’ s almost the perfection of it. Why?

Enjoyment and no rush
Have a cosy breakfast, start out relaxed. Let yourself drift and stay in a nice place while hiking on Lake Wörthersee. In summer (or according to your taste also in the other seasons) jump into the lake for refreshment. Or have a coffee in between. This is what we mean by enjoyment on the Wörthersee circular hiking trail. The four stages between the villages of Velden, Reifnitz, Krumpendorf and Pörtschach are intentionally of moderate length. With a pure walking time between 3 hours 30 min and 5 hours 30 min per stage there is enough time for a little stroll and to enjoy Lake Wörthersee with all your senses. Or to combine the Wörthersee hiking with swimming.

Endorphin instead of Adrenaline
The Wörthersee circular hiking trail is a hiking trail, no doubt – it leads with preference over unpaved forest and field paths, just the way a trail should be. However, you don’t have to be an alpine expert, an orientation genius or free from fear of heights – the last maybe if you want to climb the impressive lookout tower of Pyramidenkogel. The well-marked trail simply leads through a beautiful forest and meadow landscape with fantastic close-up and distant views of Lake Wörthersee and the surrounding mountains. And if you can’t or don’t want to go on a particular stage: a shuttle is never far away so that you can be taken to your accommodation.

Culinary delights
That’s what you get with a meal or a coffee on one of the beach promenades of the time-honoured villages around Lake Wörthersee. By the end of the 19th century, the Austrians had already chosen Lake Wörthersee as the ideal place for their summer holidays. Many villas in the style of the typical and unique Wörthersee architecture were built, which still shape the flair of places like Velden, Pörtschach or Maria Wörth today. And the tendency towards style and luxury has remained: The density of gourmet restaurants around Lake Wörthersee is as high as in a few other spots in Austria.

A pleasure for the eyes
Not a single day goes by while hiking on Lake Wörthersee with the same scenic impressions. The games of light with the lake and the surrounding landscape are phenomenal. The “light of the south” – why we call it like that you can only really understand it when you have experienced it. Sometimes the lake shimmers between turquoise and white, then it forms again a gleaming and glittering surface. Sometimes the water is so calm that you hardly dare to put a foot in it. In addition there are incredible cloud moods over the rugged mountains of the Karawanken, which border the horizon in the south. Especially the sunrises and sunsets are often very impressive.

A pleasure for the nose
You often hike in beautiful mixed forests or through meadows. Smell the wood and the leaves – the flowers and the freshly cut grass. You are in the middle of lush nature – what a contrast to strolling on the beach promenades in the evening.
